Are You Overworked? Apply These Three Steps

There are people who love to work in an environment where there chaos and loud noises.  Then there are people who prefer to work in a calm environment without all the extra noise in the background. The second one is me! I don’t mind a little fun noise, but the loudness I can’t do.  Which one are you?

In today’s work environment, the demands put upon you and I are extreme.  You don’t have just one job to focus on, compare to 30 years ago, where individuals went to work and performed ONE job.

Think for a second, how many jobs are in your job description? It’s just one or do you have two or more?

Being in the military, I wear many different HATs and it all depends on the day and what leadership needs. Yes, I have a main job and what I’m required to do daily. But, after sixteen years of experience, my job tank is overflowing!

So how do I find balance when I’m overwhelmed?  In my field, I have to find balance between work and personal life and I do this by following these three simple principles and so can you.

Prioritize

So often we get to work and the first thing we do is create a to-do list that is never-ending. We want to get as much done on our list, but we end up not being productive.

What you need to do is pick your top five items and then pick the three tasks that are HOT, meaning the boss needs it now, or it’s stopping you from moving on to the next task.

Say NO

Now you maybe saying “I can’t say no to my boss,” well you are not saying NO to your boss, you are saying NO to the additional tasks.

What you need to do, is to strategically let your boss know that the new tasks will take away from the HOT task you are working on. Also, provide another coworker’s name who has the time and is looking for new projects. This ends ups being a win-win situation for everyone.

Take time for you

I’ve done it and so have you, we forget to take that quality time because we are so focused on work. We tell ourselves to go to the gym and by the end of the day we are still at the job and we didn’t get our gym time in.

When you say, you will take time for you, you need to take action on your statement.  Your job will be there no matter what, but your health and state of mind will not if you continue to neglect yourself by being overwhelmed by work. This is a reminder to myself daily!

Remember to find that balance to where to don’t become overwhelmed too often.

Question: What actions do you implement when your overwhelmed?

This was a very helpful article. At times on my jobs I have felt overworked. I know that it is easy to continue to let work pile up on you without saying anything. I have now grown to understand that it is very important to set healthy boundaries for everyone even your boss. Practicing self-care techniques is also important because we give so much to our careers that we don’t take the time to put enough into ourselves. Great article!

You said Latrecia, so often we put our jobs first and neglect our health. We all do, and I have to tell myself to pause for a second and come back to the task later or the next day. Thank you for the comment and don’t forget to take time for you!

Wheeww!! I so needed this read! As a working mom, business owner and brand developer it can get a bit overwhelming trying to make sure I thrive in all my many titles. So it is many days that i take some time for myself to do either nothing or just some stuff for me . Learning to say no is very important especially in work setting, we all want to look like the ideal working but we cnt over work ourselves or else we cant provide quality

      Lacey,
You are correct and as moms, workers and everything else in between, we have to make time for us. I hope you find a little time for you and continue to be that fierce entrepreneur.
